“Survival of the fittest” Human survival is economic. Dominant individuals may produce dominant offspring, but in an environment that requires kindness cooperation, and diligence, dominance may be a trait that makes a species less likely to survive in the habitat which they naturally inhabit.
In the case of human beings, being physically strong or mentally astute are genetically benign traits when compared with the importance of kindness and economic cooperation.
Fitness for the purpose of survival is species specific. Which genes contribute to survival? People have been under attack from the “smart guys” and the “tough guys” (their opinion) throughout history. Compassion and cooperation are the traits that positively propel humanity, and they will determine the quality and duration of our survival as individuals and as a people.
Take the current world situation for example. Despotic rulers are being overthrown by mistreated people. “Democratic” governments and corporate business “leaders” jointly rule over people they have determined to be less fit and less deserving. They value plush lifestyles over the lives of workers, soldiers, mothers, children…
Economically we have the capacity to increase the size and quality of our environment. We pass more than our genetics from generation to generation. Besides our genes, we pass our tools, our inventions, our attitudes, and the condition we leave our environment. Human survival and the quality of life is as much a product of economic evolution as of genetic evolution. We are stuck with the genes we inherited, but we have the ability to make our environment more hospitable.
We are capable of doing much better. God is great because he serves those beneath him. Humanity will flourish when we do the same.
