State of Humanity

As human beings, we share physical, mental, and emotional traits, capabilities, and vulnerabilities. We are unique as individuals, but totally dependent on others of our own kind for comfort, capability, and survival. The health of the entire body of humankind is important to the welfare of each individual, and the health of all humanity is important to the welfare of every person. The nourishment of our individual bodies is dependent on our offering humanity nourishment and receiving nourishment from humanity.

If we list religious, educational, scientific, governmental, or business institutions that can help nourish humanity the list would be long. If we take the same list of institutions we notice that if they are inappropriately managed they can erode human dignity, safety, knowledge, organization, capability, and trust. Plans for betterment all involve adequately nurtured social institutions.

What makes an institution work for humans and humankind? Three conditions must be aligned. There must be a purpose, an efficient plan, and a window to observe the purpose being pursued and the plan being executed. The purpose must contain nourishment for humanity. the plan must protect its workers, owners, and constituents. Efficiency is achieved only by cooperative effort. The window shows clearly who gets what, and why they get it. Effective institutions are not built by big shots, exploiting the impoverished. The window is required to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Business relationships are the institutional plans in action. If they are built on a good mission, and they are in clear view of the window, humanity is being nurtured. If that isn’t the case, dysfunction devalues us as individuals, and as a people.

I am only one person, How can I make a difference? On an airplane flying high in the sky, thousands of bolts and fasteners hold it together. No one notices as long as they are all doing their job, but if one bolt fails the entire plane may fall from the sky. Each person is like one of those bolts, seemingly unimportant while they are working, but in the calamitous event of failure the immensity of their importance is tragically realized.

Clear business, ClearBiz, is a clear clean window from which we watch the institutional engines. Only from a clear vantage point can we be assured that institutional engines are properly calibrated for success. From there we can see loose bolts, and thus avoid tragedy.

  13. Maybe it’s just the passage, but I found it neat that the thing I found to be pacluier in the passage was them same thing you did. I didn’t get to examine it, though, because I was eager to hear what you had to say. I’ve also read from other sources that through the translation of the text into English, some meaning was lost. When Jesus asks Peter if he loves him the first time, he asked using a word that meant a deep love, much like the love God has for us. Peter returned by saying that he did indeed love Jesus, but it was only a love used in terms of friendship. Jesus asked again (still using the deep-love term) and got the same friendship response. Lastly, Jesus stepped down to Peter’s level and asked, in terms of friendship, if Peter loved him (to which Peter answered yes .) I found this fascinating for two reasons: 1) Jesus asked Peter three times here, and later on upon Jesus’ death, Peter denies Jesus three times and 2) I’m intrigued that Peter was saddened that Jesus asked him three times about his love. I believe a good chunk of that sadness comes from the fact that we as humans are incapable of having that deep Godly love that Jesus proposed in the first two questions, and so for Jesus to ask Peter if Peter loved Jesus as much as Jesus loves Peter, it is understandably painful to be asked to share a love that you are incapable of (of course, it’s still something to strive for). Sorry this was so long. Just thought I’d get it out there.
